History

The Imlay City High School Band began in 1877. It gained much notoriety under the direction of Mr. John Cummins.  His bands played at an exceptionally high level and sent many students into professions in music.

Currently, Imlay City High School sustains two concert bands (Wind Ensemble and Concert Band).  Students are placed into these groups by audition. Both bands are combined to form the Spartan Marching Band.  ICHS bands have maintained a tradition of excellence by receiving Division I ratings at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) State Festivals nearly every year since the early 1960’s.  Many of the students participate in MSBOA Solo & Ensemble Festivals as well as many local honors bands.

The ICHS bands travel and perform around the state and the nation.  In 1999, the band did an exchange concert with Bridgman (MI) High School.  In May of 2000 they performed in Washington, D.C.. More recently, the ICHS Bands have performed at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida in May of 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014, and in New York City in May of 2004, 2008, and 2012.
